Myung-Ah Son and You-Yeon Kim analyze how the content produced by North Korean defector Youtubers is tailored to appeal to native South Koreans.

This study examines how young North Korean defectors (YNKDs) engage with new media. It focuses on analyzing popular YouTube content to understand how South Koreans view North Korea and North Korean defectors.

The findings reveal that South Korean viewers on YouTube prefer content that emphasizes South Korea's superiority over North Korea. Consequently, YNKD YouTubers have created content categorized as "cultural assimilation," "conflict and compromise," and "seeking alternatives." By sharing authentic stories of migration experiences and North Korean identities, YNKDs seek to reshape South Koreans' understanding of North Korean defectors.
