Ontological security is the stability attained by maintaining a consistent understanding of the world and a secure perception of one’s place in it. Dr. Gudgeon's article analyses states’ narratives from the understanding that states try to secure citizens’ ontological security through narratives, and citizens expect to find stability in them. He posits that theorizing “fateful moments” provides a window into understanding periods where narrative and behavioural change between states involved in intractable conflicts become possible. The article is about demonstrating how narratives regarding an enemy ‘other’ can be changed to legitimize peace by maintaining an air of continuity about the story and making change feel natural so that it is acceptable to the public.
